Nature is able to produce extraordinary landscapes. Yet these two-tone views where black mountains emerge in a yellow sea are mainly due to the hand of man. The plots, leveled and planted exclusively with rapeseed, are the work of Buyi farmers in the Luoping region. At the end of winter, rapeseed flowers color the entire valley in yellow. Nicknamed “the golden sea”, this landscape is really surprising because it is enhanced by the dark mountains that escape cultures. Rapeseed covers some 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres) concentrated around Luoping. Like the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau, these vivid panoramas attract tourists and many photographers. Here are some pictures…

How to get to Luoping?
The city of Luoping is located 200km (124mi) east of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, China. Better to go there between mid-February and April, when rapeseed is in bloom. From the city center, take the G324 east for about ten kilometers. Here you are in the heart of fields and hills! Other spots are accessible to the northwest and southeast of the city.
